Ontario Trauma Registry Metadata

Overview

The Ontario Trauma Registry (OTR) identifies, describes and quantifies trauma injuries in Ontario. 

Financed by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the OTR comprises three data sets: the Minimum Data Set (MDS), the Comprehensive Data Set (CDS) and the Death Data Set (DDS). Read more about each of these data sets by selecting the Data Coverage tab below.

Data Source

The OTR is composed of three distinct data sets:

• MDS data comes from the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD).
• CDS data comes from 11 lead trauma facilities in Ontario.
• DDS data comes from the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.

Data Coverage

The OTR is composed of three distinct data sets:

• The MDS contains demographic, diagnostic and procedural data on all admissions to acute care hospitals due to injury in Ontario.
• The CDS contains detailed data on patients hospitalized in 11 lead trauma facilities in Ontario due to major trauma, including demographic, pre-hospital and hospital care, and patient outcomes information.
• The DDS contains data on all deaths in Ontario due to injury, including demographic data, cause of death, injury details, motor vehicle crash information and factors contributing to death (such as alcohol).

Data is available for the following fiscal years:

  • DDS: 2006–2007
• Historical series:
  • MDS: 1994–1995 to 2009–2010
  • CDS: 1999–2000 to 2022–2023
  • DDS: 1986–1987 to 2005–2006

Classification

The OTR uses the ICD-10-CA/CCI classification system.

As of 2004–2005, all records have been reported in ICD-10-CA and CCI; prior to that, ICD-9, CCP and ICD‑9‑CM were used.
