March 2020 — CIHI is committed to collecting, analyzing and sharing credible health data to help improve our health care systems and the health of all Canadians. We’ve compiled our key reports and resources containing information related to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and will update this page with new content whenever possible.

CIHI’s data and information

Here is the most recent public data CIHI has available on a number of topics that relate to COVID-19.

Health care workers

Health care professionals are one of the greatest assets of Canada’s health care systems. Click the following links to take a closer look at the number and distribution of health professionals in Canada, many of whom are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic:

Hospitals and emergency departments

Canada’s capacity to care for the sickest patients diagnosed with COVID-19 depends on the number of hospital beds and health care resources available. Data on primary reasons for hospitalizations and emergency department wait times reflects the load shouldered by hospitals prior to the pandemic.

CIHI will be releasing more information on hospital beds, ICUs and ventilation in the coming weeks.

Beyond the hospitals

People older than age 65 have shown to be more vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19. Residents of long-term care facilities and those receiving home care are therefore at higher risk than the rest of Canada’s population.

Health care spending

Health-spending trends and data on where money is spent (e.g., on hospitals, physician payments and pharmaceuticals) can be used as benchmarks for additional COVID-19–related costs.

Your Health System

Your Health System (YHS) is a unique tool with an array of comparable health system data on hospitals, long-term care facilities and the health of Canadians across the country. The indicators in the tool provide baseline data on more than 600 hospitals and 1,300 long-term care facilities. Examples of searchable information related to COVID-19 in YHS include

  • Ambulatory care sensitive conditions
  • High users of hospital beds
  • Long-term care residents older than 85
  • Hospital occupancy rates
  • Emergency department data

External data sources

It is not customary for CIHI to direct visitors to external data sources that we have not created, but these are unprecedented times. We think it’s important for Canadians to have access to reliable information. Our data experts have reviewed these sources and think they might be valuable to you.

New codes to allow for comparable data
