Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) metadata

Overview

Since 2018, CIHI has been collecting data on hip and knee arthroplasty patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

PROMs data is captured by hospitals using licensed survey tools (e.g., Oxford Hip Score, Oxford Knee Score). These surveys are repeated longitudinally pre- and post-surgery to track outcomes from a patient’s perspective over time and to monitor gains in improvement.

PROMs data collection is mandatory for hospitals that perform hip and knee replacement surgeries. Data sources differ by jurisdiction.

Surgical information is sourced from CIHI’s Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS).

Data coverage

Coverage varies by jurisdiction. In Ontario, hospitals collecting PROMs represented 89% of the primary, elective, unilateral hip and knee replacements done in 2024–2025. This is up from 83% coverage in 2023–2024.

Data availability

PROMs data is based on surgery date and is collected by fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).

National (Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta) aggregate-level data is available biennially:

Classification

No official classification standards are used in the capture of PROMs data (outside of the DAD and NACRS).

Data elements

Data elements in the minimum data set (MDS) include those related to the PROMs surveys, patient information, survey administration and clinical/administrative information.
