Total number of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures performed in a fiscal year.

Rationale

Considering that about 2.4 million Canadians are living with heart disease and that Canada's population is increasingly at risk,1 it's important to examine the quality of cardiac care in order to support improvements in care and ultimately in the health of Canadians.

PCI is a well-established procedure to treat coronary artery stenosis. Current evidence suggests that centres that perform fewer than 400 PCIs per year have a larger incidence of adverse events.2 Based on this evidence, annual PCI volume has been identified as a key quality indicator for PCI care by the Canadian Cardiovascular Society.3

National measurement of and reporting on this indicator is important due to the continued establishment of new PCI centres.4

This measure belongs to a suite of Cardiac Care quality indicators (CCQI) that provided pan-Canadian comparable information on outcomes related to selected cardiac interventions. The goal was to support monitoring and quality improvement in cardiac care. Results for 2020–2021 are the last that will be published for this measure.
