Children and youth with medical complexity in Canada

This population’s unique needs mean they require more health care compared with other children and youth. (Data presented here is for 2015–2016.)

Acute care

Compared with children and youth with other conditions, children and youth with medical complexity accounted for 54% of total days spent in hospital, 57% of total hospital care costs and 37% of total hospital stays.

Specialty clinic

On average, children and youth with medical complexity from Alberta visited specialty clinics 13 times over 2 years.

Medication

2 in 5 children and youth with medical complexity used 5 or more different drug classes in 1 year.
