Urgent/emergent request for changes to ICD-10-CA: Public submission form

In September 2024, CIHI communicated to stakeholders that ICD-10-CA will be frozen in its 2022 version to align with the World Health Organization (WHO), which stopped updating ICD-10 in 2019. This will enable us to devote resources to assessing the readiness of ICD-11 for implementation in Canada.

To remain responsive to urgent or emergent health information needs, CIHI has made available U50–U99 Provisional codes for research and temporary assignment in Canada. These codes are to be used only at the direction of CIHI until the adoption of ICD-11 in Canada.

The public submission requests for ICD-10-CA are restricted to urgent/emergent requests.

  • Complete the ICD-10-CA urgent/emergent public submission request form below if you can provide evidence that your request meets at least one of the following criteria for urgent/emergent data requirements:
    1. Current Canadian urgent health concern
    2. Pan-Canadian health research priority
  • Do not submit a public submission form if the request relates to 
    • Formatting (e.g., spacing)
    • Grammatical errors (e.g., typos, spelling)

Description:
Provide a detailed description of your request (i.e., What is the specific clinical concept required?) 
Evidence/rationale:
Include a detailed rationale outlining why a new code is necessary, the benefits of a new code and the current information gap. If the rationale is unclear, we will contact the requestor for clarification.
Supporting Documentation
Please provide any references used, such as internet addresses (URLs) or copies of articles, and cite the author, title, journal, text, volume, page and year as necessary. If supporting documentation is incomplete, this submission will be returned with a request for more information.

Do not include any patient record information (including personal health information). If you wish to submit clinical documentation related to a specific case, please email  classifications&terminologies@cihi.ca for guidance.
