SNOMED map release — update
The SNOMED CT to ICD-10-CA map set and the Pan-Canadian Health Concern Value Set (PHCVS) will be released in October 2023. This is to ensure that the map sets align with the release of the SNOMED CT Canadian Edition on October 3, 2023. The maps will be made available on CIHI’s Health information software vendors web page and CIHI’s eSTORE, along with the supporting implementation guides and Coder Education Manual. Questions about the maps can be directed to classifications@cihi.ca.
NEW Tips for coders on homelessness and pressure ulcers
Stay tuned for the upcoming release of 2 new Tips for coders in November: Homelessness and Pressure Ulcers (injuries). These tips were developed to provide clarification on the coding direction. CIHI is developing tips that will support accurate data collection, provide clarification and help maintain consistency among coders. Tips will be posted on the Classification resources web page.
Z59.0 Homelessness: A coding success story
Since mandating data collection of homelessness beginning in 2018–2019 and further refining it in 2022–2023, CIHI is now using the data in its first reporting on homelessness. Also available is an infographic that describes a 5-step process for creating and using data to improve care for patients experiencing homelessness. This work was highlighted recently in The Globe and Mail: Code Z59.0: diagnosing the toll of homelessness on health care.
Coming soon: New ClaML format for ICD-10-CA/CCI
CIHI will soon be releasing the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA) and the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI) in a Classification Markup Language (ClaML) format, which is an ISO standard for classifications ISO 13120:2019. It represents the content and structure of the classifications in a markup language for the exchange of the classification. This new format for the classifications will be in addition to our existing text-based classification tables, HTML files and PDF files.
eQuery list of archived and revised questions
The updated eQuery Questions: Archived and Revised, and Coding Direction in eQuery Only is now available. It lists archived coding questions and coding questions that were closed and posted or that were posted only for revised responses or for which direction was provided in eQuery.
ICD-11 readiness assessment results
To support the implementation of the International Classification of Diseases, Eleventh Revision (ICD-11) in Canada’s health care systems, it is important to assess the existing landscape of hospital and clinical information systems, electronic health records and national health databases. To accomplish this goal, CIHI consulted with stakeholders and vendors across Canada and conducted an ICD-11 readiness assessment using a range of collection instruments such as surveys, focus groups and interviews. The outcomes of the assessment have been shared with participants through an executive summary. We are excited to share the findings as a poster presentation at the upcoming WHO-FIC Network Annual Meeting in Bonn, Germany.
Highlights of ICD-11 webinar
Newly released in September, this webinar provides a high-level overview of new features in ICD-11 and highlights key changes between ICD-11 and ICD-10-CA (the Canadian modification of ICD-10). This is the third webinar CIHI has released on this topic. Recordings and transcripts of the first 2 ICD-11 webinars are available on our Codes and Classifications web page.
