CIHI’s analytical plan: Introduction

About this product

The analytical products and indicators produced by CIHI aim to inform the public, enlighten policy decisions and answer the most critical questions of health system managers, clinicians and other health stakeholders. The purpose of the corporate analytical plan is to provide a consolidated view of CIHI’s analytical activities to ensure that they are

  • Aligned with CIHI’s strategic directions and priorities
  • Relevant to stakeholder needs
  • Transparent for our partners, to help identify opportunities for collaboration and avoid duplication

The plan builds on consultations with our stakeholders as well as on our own assessment of health information trends, technologies and opportunities regarding the information needs of CIHI’s priority audiences, including policy-makers and health system managers. It presents a rolling picture of CIHI’s new analytical projects, including new indicators and analytical reports, over a 2-year period.

This product provides brief descriptions of projects released or to be released between April 1, 2023, and March 31, 2025, categorized by the priority theme areas defined in CIHI’s multi-year business plan, including the new health information priorities.

Refining our health information priorities

CIHI maintains an extensive foundational base of health system information. We place particular emphasis on near- and longer-term priorities expressed by the federal, provincial, territorial and Indigenous partners we work with. Through rigorous research into needs, we have identified and validated priority areas for data collection, analysis and dissemination over the course of this plan. These 9 new health information priority areas reflect the needs of our health system leaders, who have asked that we

  • Deliver on our commitment to measure common indicators for the new shared health priorities focused on improving integrated health care for Canadians, and continue to deliver on our previous Shared Health Priorities commitment to provide insight into access to mental health and substance use services and to home and community care across the country
  • Provide information that supports their understanding of the impact and lingering effects of the pandemic
  • Work with them to plan for more resilient and sustainable health systems, including looking at health workforce considerations and building on advancements in virtual care
  • Work with Indigenous health leaders on their information priorities, including measurement of cultural safety in health systems
  • Stratify health system data with available equity measures and connect with public and population health data for a broader view of social determinants and outcomes

As the work on refining our current priorities continues, adjustments to what is currently presented within the analytical plan may be made, including change in scope of select products.
