CIHI SNOMED CT CA to ICD-10-CA Map and Pan-Canadian Health Concern Value Set now available

The CIHI SNOMED CT Canadian Edition (CA) to ICD-10-CA reference set and the Pan-Canadian Health Concern Value Set (PHCVS) were released on October 31, 2023, and are now available on CIHI’s health information software vendors web page and in CIHI’s eStore. This release marks a significant milestone in health care data management, further strengthening CIHI’s commitment to excellence in the health care sector to help facilitate semantic interoperability.

The SNOMED CT CA to ICD-10-CA refset provides a semi-automated link from structured clinical information recorded in an electronic health record (EHR) by a clinician using SNOMED CT; this supports data reporting requirements and improves efficiency in coding. To facilitate the implementation and utilization of the refset, a comprehensive Vendor Implementation Guide and Coder Education Manual are available on CIHI’s SNOMED CT CA to classifications maps web page.

The PHCVS provides a solution for automated data collection in primary care electronic medical record (EMR) systems that use SNOMED CT at the point of care. This value set maps a comprehensive list of SNOMED CT CA terms to ICD-10-CA for data collection, and to ICD-9 to support physician billing code assignment. This value set also includes a Vendor Implementation Guide to support implementation and use.

Both maps (CIHI SNOMED CT CA to ICD-10-CA Map and the Pan-Canadian Health Concern Value Set) will be subsequently revised to align with the SNOMED CT Canadian Edition updates.

Web page title change to include terminologies

Coming soon: The title of the Codes and Classifications web page will be updated to Codes, Classifications and Terminologies. This change better reflects the Classifications and Terminologies department, the nature of our work and the diverse range of tasks we are engaged in.

EDVS update of most recent release

Version 2.2 of the Emergency Department Intervention Value Set (EDVS) has been released and can be found in CIHI’s eStore. This version aligns with the October 3, 2023, release of SNOMED CT Canadian Edition (SNOMED CT CA). Please note that not all SNOMED CT CA terms include a French translation because not all of SNOMED CT CA has been translated to date.
