This is CIHI’s 12th annual report in the Wait Times series. The report is accompanied by an update of the Wait Times web tool, which can be used to monitor progress as provinces work to reduce wait times and meet evidence-based benchmarks for priority procedures in Canada.

These data tables provide information on induced abortions performed in a hospital or clinic setting in Canada in 2015. Age breakdown and geographic distribution are provided for hospital and clinic data; gestational age, method of abortion and complications within 28 days are provided for hospital data.

Unnecessary Care in Canada

Choosing Wisely Canada (CWC) is a national, clinician-led campaign that aims to reduce potentially unnecessary care by encouraging patient–provider conversations. In this joint report, CIHI and CWC quantify the unnecessary tests and procedures that are done every year in Canada, across 8 CWC recommendations. The report also highlights ways that partner organizations from across the country are using specific programs and approaches to reduce potentially unnecessary treatments and procedures. Specifics on the data and methodology used for this report are detailed in the accompanying technical report.

COPD in Alberta: Examining the Characteristics and Health Care Use of High Users

This report will compare the characteristics and health care use of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who have been identified as high users of inpatient hospital care (COPD high users) — using CIHI’s High Users of Hospital Beds indicator — with low/moderate users of hospital care. It will also describe the prevalence of COPD and the health care service use of COPD high users across Alberta’s health zones.

This CIHI Snapshot provides key information on 2015–2016 inpatient hospitalizations, surgeries and childbirth indicators. The data tables include data on the top 10 reasons for hospitalizations and surgeries; in-hospital births; and standardized hospitalization rates and average lengths of stay. Additional tables provide information concerning hip and knee replacements in Canada.
