Alcohol Harm in Canada: Examining Hospitalizations Entirely Caused by Alcohol and Strategies to Reduce Alcohol Harm

This report provides an overview of Canada-wide variations in alcohol consumption (using data on alcohol sales and heavy drinking) and alcohol harm using CIHI’s new Hospitalizations Entirely Caused by Alcohol indicator. The report also presents the alcohol control policy landscape across provinces and territories; it specifically examines regulations governing the sale, distribution, availability and price of alcohol, along with the inclusion of screening, brief intervention and referral in an alcohol or mental health and addictions strategy. Data collected by Statistics Canada and CIHI as well as information from provincial and territorial ministries and agencies were used for this report.

Injury and Trauma Emergency Department and Hospitalization Statistics
This release contains information on emergency department visits and hospitalizations for injuries and trauma, with breakdowns provided by cause, province, age group and sex. It also contains the most recent data on sport-related brain injuries (including concussions) from 2011–2012 to 2015–2016.
