Access

How do I get permission to access eNACRS Reports if I’m not a current user?

  • All Core Plan members can request access to CIHI’s services online. Please follow the steps outlined in the Guide to Accessing CIHI Services.
  • Please note that CIHI Portal users are automatically granted access to eNACRS Reports.

Availability/Coverage

How timely and up to date are eNACRS Reports?

  • The data is refreshed monthly. Data submitted by the end of the third business day of the month will be reflected in updated reports available on the 15th business day of each month.
  • The annual schedule is available on the Updates page.
  • Note that new fiscal year data is available annually beginning in May of that fiscal year.

What do eNACRS Reports offer?

  • eNACRS Reports
    • Answer key business questions about your emergency department (ED) and ambulatory care activities;
    • Enable meaningful comparisons with peers and other jurisdictions across the country;
    • Illustrate trends and variations over time;
    • Include key performance indicators, such as ED wait times, to identify areas for improvement; and
    • Include ambulatory activity volumes and Comprehensive Ambulatory Classification System (CACS) comparative reports.

Functionality

Why do some reports generate less quickly than others?

  • The run time of the reports depends on the type and complexity of the report, as well as user activity at specific times of the day. For example, if you are running a Flexible/Custom Report during peak hours with many metrics and years of data, the report may take longer to generate than a Dashboard or Quick View Report that narrows the scope of the data.
  • To generate the report more quickly, it is recommended that you limit the fiscal years selected in your report.
  • To maintain proper functionality within the eReporting tool, you should limit your history list to no more than 50 items (see below for how to clear your history list).
  • The Clinical Administrative Databases (CAD) program area proactively monitors and tracks the performance of reports. We also encourage user feedback. If you experience performance issues with eNACRS Reports, please let us know at cad@cihi.ca.


Can I generate more than 1 report at the same time?

  • Yes, you can generate multiple reports at the same time. All reports are saved to your personal history list, where you can check run status and access previously generated reports.


Can I clear my history list?

  • Yes, you can access and clear individual reports from your history by checking the delete box next to the report and clicking delete.


Which reports are the most interactive and/or flexible to users?

  • eNACRS Reports is an interactive reporting tool delivered via the MicroStrategy business intelligence software. The 3 report types—Dashboards, Quick Reports and Flexible/Custom Reports—provide options for users with different levels of analytical skill. See details below.

Dashboards: There are 3 dashboards that provide visual and interactive snapshots of ED wait times; they are the easiest reports to use.

My ED Wait Times at a Glance

This dashboard provides a snapshot of all the ED Wait Time Indicators’ trends over time. Colour-coded arrows let you know if wait times are increasing, decreasing or remaining stable. By clicking on the arrows, you can drill down to the Quick Reports for each indicator.

My ED Wait Times Targets

In this dashboard, the graph on the left shows your selected indicator broken down by common pre-identified targets.


On the right, the results are broken down by individual hour. You can adjust the slider to the target hour of your choice, and both the grid and graph will update accordingly. The total number of cases included in the report is displayed above the graphs.

My ED Wait Times Comparison Profile

In this dashboard, the graph on the left provides the breakdown by province and the national 90th percentile; the graph on the right presents results at a regional level for the selected province. Clicking a different province bar in the left-hand graph will automatically update the corresponding regional results in the right-hand graph.

 

Quick Reports: Easy to use, these reports provide the underlying data of the associated dashboards in a grid and graph view.

There are additional Quick Reports in which you can review your average volumes by time and day, top 25 diagnoses, interventions, CACS, presenting complaints and discharge diagnoses, as well as 2 Quick Reports that focus on your regrouped data.

All Quick Reports contain the 2 most recent years of data and, if applicable, the 2 most recent CACS grouping methodologies.

Flexible/Custom Reports: These reports, targeted at more advanced users, provide a prompted but flexible report by letting you filter the data to specific subsets; choose the attributes, metrics and populations of interest; and customize to a specific peer group.

Can I save my prompt selections?

  • Yes, you can save your Population of Interest and Comparison Population selections by checking Save this answer when report is run. This will auto-populate the prompt selection box for future reports so that you don’t have to make the same selections every time you generate a report.

Can I save prompted and static reports?

  • You can also save reports with or without prompts. To save static reports (with no prompts) simply uncheck the option Keep report prompted at the bottom of the Save As window when saving a report. If you leave the box checked, you will have the ability to adjust all prompt selections when regenerating your saved report.

 

Can I save reports in a shared folder so that other eNACRS users can access them?

  • Yes, saving reports in the Shared Reports folders allows all other eNACRS users to access them.

Can I save reports in a folder that only I have access to?

  • Yes, saving reports in the My Reports folder means that only you will be able to access them.

 

Output/Printing Options

I want to present my reports at a meeting. Can I print or export the generated reports?

  • You can export eNACRS reports into PDF, CSV, Excel, HTML or plain text formats. Printing and exporting can be done using the appropriate export and print icons in the Home tab (see below).

Notes:
Due to the nature of Dashboard Reports, exporting to Excel is not an option.

Populations of Interest and Peer Groups

 

What is the population of interest?

What peer groupings are available in eNACRS?

  • Acute hospital peer groups are available in eNACRS. The purpose of assigning hospitals to a peer group is to facilitate standard comparisons by categorizing facilities that have similar structural and patient characteristics.
  • You can also create your own peer groups. Please refer to the eNACRS Standard and Customized Peer Grouping Toolkit for information on peer groups.

I work for a multi-site organization. Are there any reports that allow me to select more than 1 facility to report on so that I can include all of my sites in the same report?

I can’t locate the ON ED Pay for Performance Population. Is this population available in eNACRS?

  • The ON ED Pay for Performance Population is not available in eNACRS, although you may create your own custom population.

Attributes

Where can I find descriptions of the attributes?

  • If the meaning of an attribute is unclear, simply hover your cursor over the attribute in the report to make a description appear. This feature also applies to metrics and graph points.
  • For a full description of the attributes available in the reports and to learn about ways to query and view the data, please refer to the eNACRS Attributes Toolkit.

Can I filter or select attributes based on MIS Functional Centre Account Code?

  • Filter/attribute options by MIS Functional Centre Account Code are not currently available in eNACRS. You can access the MIS Functional Centre Account Codes in the CIHI Portal environment only (if you have access to it). Ambulatory Care Group and Ambulatory Care Type, which are derived using the MIS Functional Centre Account Code, offer a higher-level grouping of the data (e.g., ED, day surgery, clinic). These attributes are accessible in both eNACRS and CIHI Portal. Please refer to the eNACRS Attributes Toolkit for information on Ambulatory Care Group and Ambulatory Care Type

Metrics

Where can I find descriptions of the metrics?

  • If the meaning of a metric is unclear, simply hover your cursor over the metric in the report to make a description appear. This feature also applies to attributes and graph points.

How are the ED Wait Time Indicators calculated?

How do I interpret the 90th percentile values?

  • The 90th percentile is the value of a variable such that 90% of the relevant population is below that value. For example, if a facility’s Admitted ED LOS (90th %ile) is 26 hours, it means that 90% of the admitted patients spend 26 hours or less in the ED.

Troubleshooting Tips

I’m trying to generate a Flexible/Custom Report and I keep getting a message stating “No Results Returned.” How can I reframe my report criteria to generate results?

  • Review your prompt selections, as too many filters may have been applied to the data. A common issue is mixing up the filter and attributes prompts. The items you select in the filter prompt will limit the data returned in your report, whereas the attributes prompt will identify the way you would like the data sorted.

    For example, say you wish to generate a report that includes ED LOS for admitted patients and you would like the data broken down by triage level. You would also like to compare the discharged patient data. In this case, you would select the Disposition Group or Triage Level in the attributes prompt rather than the filter prompt. You can identify the Ambulatory Care Group to filter the data on ED visits only so that you do not include clinic or day surgery cases in your report.
