Hospital expenses and statistics

What are the expenses of Canada’s hospitals? Find out in these annual data tables — Hospital Expenses Net of Recoveries — on trends in hospital expenses, by province, territory and Canada, from 1999–2000 to 2015–2016.

Also released: Hospital MIS Statistics. These data tables contain information on hospital inpatient days, inpatient admissions, ambulatory care visits, emergency visits and day/night care visits, by province, territory and Canada, from 1999–2000 to 2015–2016.

The Cost of a Standard Hospital Stay (CSHS) indicator is one of the most widely used financial indicators produced by CIHI. It is used to monitor and compare the costs of a typical inpatient stay in acute care hospitals. External factors and hospital management decisions are the main drivers of variability; this report attempts to identify and estimate the effect of these factors on the variability of the CSHS values.

The Your Health System web tool has been refreshed with a new year of data for certain indicators. We’ve also added a new indicator: Hospitalizations Entirely Caused by Alcohol. CIHI’s Indicator Library has also been updated.
