CIHI has redesigned its website to better serve our customers and help you find all that you are looking for. This page will help orient you to the new site so you can take advantage of its many new features. We’ve compiled the top questions about this site, along with information to help you use the site more effectively and get the most out of CIHI has to offer. If at any time you experience difficulties using the site, you can access our Help Desk for technical support.
- Site Organization
CIHI’s new website is designed based on our customers’ feedback. The content is organized in themes for easy access and cross-reference. You’ll find four health care themes—Types of Care, Health System Performance, Spending and Health Work Force, and Factors Influencing Health—across the top navigation bar. You’ll also find four other tabs across the top that provide easy access to essential information—Quick Stats, Standards and Data Submission, Events and Education, and About CIHI.
The top navigation bar also puts CIHI’s Products and Applications—the interactive tools and databases our customers use every day to obtain or retrieve information—within easy reach. In addition, you’ll find media products, including news releases and bulletins, as well as FAQs on almost every page of the site.
Each tab you select from the navigation bar at the top pulls up a main theme page. You’ll find a menu on the left-hand side of each page letting you know what additional information is available on that subject. You’ll access more information on that subject by clicking on the items in the menu.
A footer menu is found at the bottom of each page. It contains useful links to the site map, applications, products and help, as well as information on copyright, privacy and security, and how to contact CIHI.
Related content appears at the bottom of select pages. This related content provides links to content in other areas of the site that are related to the information on the current page. For instance, you might find education, media, events or products listed on the bottom of the page. Selecting the education link will take you to education offerings in other areas of the site that are related to the subject on the current page.
Browse through the site now, or use the advanced search at the right-hand corner of the site. You can also use the breadcrumb trail at the top of every page to move around the site. For more information, consult our site map.
Who to contact for technical support
CIHI has worked hard to ensure that this site performs properly on all standard web browsers and platforms. However, if you encounter technical problems with our site please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. You will receive faster service if you include the following information in your message:
- The name of the page you were on when you encountered the problem (ideally, by cutting and pasting the URL of the page from your browser’s address display or by copying the title at the top of the page); and
- A detailed description of the problem, such as a copy of any error message you receive or an explanation of what didn’t work (for example, “I clicked the submit button but nothing happened.”).

- I can't find what I'm looking for - can I search?
If you can't find the information you're looking for, you can use the search feature located at the top right-hand side of the home page. Simply type key words or phrases into the text box and submit your query by clicking on search or hitting the enter key on your keyboard. Once in the search result page, you can also try an advanced search by using the filters in the drop-down menu supplied.
- What if I get lost?
You will never be lost on the CIHI website thanks to an Breadcrumb trail that appears just under the top menu on every page except the home page. The trail not only tells you where you are in the site, it provides hyperlinks to each preceding level (to a maximum of three) of the site’s hierarchy, back to the home page. For example, if you were on the page about joint replacements, the breadcrumb trail would read as follows:

Whether you arrive at a page by navigating through menu options, as a result of a search or by clicking on a related content link, you’ll always be able to figure out where you are within the site.
- Can I download and print documents?
Some files, particularly large documents such as reports, are intended more for printing than viewing online. This site makes these files available in Adobe Acrobat’s portable document format (PDF). All links on this site that lead to PDF files are followed by the text “(PDF) XX KB” to advise you of this and provide the size of the file (large files may take a long time to download at slow connection speeds). Many current browsers have a PDF viewer built in. If yours does not, you can download free Acrobat Reader software from Adobe’s website. If a publication is available in electronic format and is free to the public, it can be downloaded directly from the site. Downloadable publications that are not free to the public must be purchased through CIHI’s eStore.
- How do I purchase products from CIHI's site?
You can access our eStore directly from CIHI’s main page, by clicking on the products link. This link opens the new eStore home page. You can then add a publication to your cart and check it out for purchase. To do so, you will need to sign in using your existing username and password.
- How do I access Client Services on the new site?
Client Services, which provides CIHI clients with access to a variety of services through a single sign in, is now part of the applications link at the top of every page. You simply select this link to access applications and log in as you previously did.
- Can I read more on a topic?
Depending on the size and resolution of your monitor, many of the pages on this site will contain more information than can be displayed on your screen at one time. For this reason, many pages have a read more… or view more… link at the bottom of a block of text with links to another page. This link gives you quick access to additional pages and more in-depth information on a topic.
