About This Report

A decade ago, Canada was falling behind many developed countries on access to health care services, specifically in terms of wait times. In 2004, first ministers responded with the 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care, agreeing to reduce wait times in five priority areas. But to improve the overall performance of the health care system, an understanding of wait times across the health care continuum—particularly from the patient’s perspective—is required. This report highlights what is known about the patient’s experience in waiting for care in different settings and where gaps exist. It also provides examples of initiatives that have been successful at improving wait times in different areas. An interactive timeline allows users to follow a patient’s experience across the health care continuum as he waits for knee replacement surgery, one of the identified priority procedures.

Hani’s Knee Replacement Journey

Hani is a 55-year-old Canadian immigrant who has recently made his home on Vancouver Island. He has been experiencing pain and increasingly limited mobility of his knees for a few years. He visits his family physician, who refers him to a specialist. Upon diagnosing Hani with osteoarthritis, his orthopedic surgeon recommends that he have a total knee replacement to address his joint pain and to ensure that he can resume the active lifestyle he had previously enjoyed. This interactive timeline allows users to navigate Hani’s experience across different sectors of the health care continuum as he waits for knee replacement surgery, and to learn more about individual segments of his waits.
