Eric Sutherland brings numerous years of experience in data management, governance and strategy, in both the public and private sectors, to CIHI’s focus on internal and pan-Canadian health data governance. He is actively involved in developing our internal data governance approach and implementation plan.
Most recently, Mr. Sutherland was with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, where he provided strategic leadership in developing a health system information management strategy. This included enabling trusted information through data standards, quality and stewardship; improving privacy-enabled access through education, processes and legislation; and creating insights that drive action to enable positive health outcomes by leveraging leading analytical methodologies. Mr. Sutherland is also a lecturer at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies in the area of managing big data and predictive analytics. Other experience includes business, technology and information leadership positions at TD Bank across finance, risk and treasury over 20 years.
Mr. Sutherland holds a Bachelor of Mathematics (Statistics, Combinatorics and Optimization) and a Master of Mathematics (Biostatistics), both from the University of Waterloo. He also completed a postgraduate certificate in public administration from the University of Liverpool.
