Timely Access to Care

Results from The Commonwealth Fund 2015 International Health Policy Survey of Primary Care Physicians show that timely access to care remains a challenge but is improving in Canada.

53% of Canadian family doctors offered same- or next-day appointments, below the international average. However, timely access has improved since 2009.

48% of Canadian family doctors have arrangements for after-hours care.

Almost 60% of physicians who work in primary care teams offer after-hours care, compared with 37% of physicians in other practice models. Primary care teams are those supported by public funds. Examples include family health teams in Ontario, primary care networks in Alberta and groupes de médecine de famille in Quebec.
