Reminder for v2021 enhancements to the classifications

Please submit suggestions for enhancements to the ICD-10-CA/CCI classifications via the public submission request form by March 31, 2019. Approved enhancements will be implemented in v2021 of the classifications.

For more information, read the Public Submission Guidelines.

Post-intervention condition coding

Many CIHI health indicators rely on the collection of accurate and consistent post-intervention data, such as the Hospital Harm indicators. Given the impact of post-intervention conditions on patient safety, patient care and the cost of that care, this data is important. There are a number of resources available to assist with selecting the codes for a post-intervention condition, including

In the Spotlight webinars

On December 4, 2018, the Classifications and Terminologies team hosted the second In the Spotlight webinar, which focused on the use of Code Basket in Folio Views and included demonstrations of the product. Links to English and French recordings of the webinar will be posted on the Codes and Classifications web page after December 12, 2018.

In the Spotlight webinars are not available in CIHI’s Learning Centre and do not require registration. Webinar details (topic, date, instructions for access, etc.) will be circulated by email. If you would like to be added to the distribution list, please let us know (classifications@cihi.ca). Missed a webinar? You can find both English and French recordings of all sessions on our Codes and Classifications web page.

ICD-11

On June 18, 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) released an advance preview of ICD-11 to allow countries to plan how to use the new version, prepare translations and train health professionals. ICD-11 will be presented to the World Health Assembly in May 2019 for adoption by Member States and, if adopted, will come into effect on January 1, 2022. No decision has been made for the implementation of ICD-11 in Canada; however, CIHI plans to undertake further testing of the latest release and supporting products to understand the business and statistical implications of adoption.

In our role as a WHO Field Trial Centre, CIHI has participated in ICD-11 field trials. These have given us the opportunity to provide a great deal of feedback to WHO. CIHI is currently working on a number of exciting ICD-11 initiatives, from education to analysis and impact reporting. Details of all initiatives will be shared throughout 2019.

ICD-11 field-testing opportunities

Over the coming months, CIHI would like to invite stakeholders to participate in field-testing ICD-11. We will be seeking classifications expertise and experience in all areas of health care, from primary to acute care.

This will be an excellent opportunity to test the classification, to assess and understand how it differs from ICD-10-CA, and to consider its benefits and improvements.

For more information on ICD-11, visit the WHO website.

Coding questions

Archived coding questions

Because 2018 is a new version year for the classifications and the Canadian Coding Standards, we undertook a mass archive of historic coding questions to reduce the number of invalid or irrelevant answers that eQuery users have to filter through to find the answer to a question. This practice is similar to what’s been done for the release of previous versions of the classification. All questions pertaining to fiscal years 2012–2013, 2013–2014 and 2014–2015 have now been archived.

Updated coding questions

On occasion, a coding question is reopened to revise the answer. This is done when an error is identified, there is new information or there is a change of direction and there is value in revising the answer.

The following coding questions have been revised and updated since June 2018. Log in to eQuery now to review them.
