Highlights of the CIHI Board of Directors Meeting

A special meeting of the members was held to address the Region 3 (Ontario) government vacancy on the Board. Mr. Saäd Rafi, new Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care was elected.
The Chair, Mr. Graham Scott, called the Board of Directors meeting to order at 12:00 p.m. and welcomed those present, including Mr. John McGarry, the incoming Region 5 (Atlantic) non-government representative, who attended the meeting as an observer.
Mr. John Wright, President and CEO, in his President’s Report to the Board, focused his remarks on corporate level highlights, including the recruitment of the new Vice President, Research and Analysis, Mr. Jeremy Veillard; the status of the independent evaluation and performance audit; the approach being considered for the renewal of the provincial bilateral agreements and the renewal of the Health Information Initiative with Health Canada; a review of the CIHI’s compensation program; changes to CIHI’s Rewards and Recognition event; as well as, an update on the network vulnerability testing. He went on to review the organization’s priority initiatives and expected achievements for the upcoming quarter. He also reported on the plans for the June 2010 Board meeting.
Mr. Kevin Empey, Chair of the FAC provided an update on the activities of the FAC including:
- Internal and External Audits
- Review of the Q3 Report and Financial Statements
- Quarterly Management Certification Reports
- Compensation Review (in-camera session)
Mr. Empey then presented the highlights of the draft FY2010-21011 Operational Plan and Budget, which the Board unanimously approved.
Mr. Jean-Marie Berthelot, Vice President, Programs, presented an overview of CIHI’s e-reporting activities.
Mr. Douglas Yeo, Director, Clinical Data Standards, Quality and Methodology, provided an overview of CIHI’s Data Quality Strategy and highlighted improvements that have been made over the last several years.
Mr. Berthelot provided an update on the Primary Health Care information program at CIHI.
Mr. Berthelot provided a brief update on the Canadian Hospital Report Pilot Project.
Mr. Scott introduced Dr. Howard Bergman, Vice President and Scientific Director of the Fonds de la recherché en Santé du Québec (FRSQ), who shared his thoughts and insights on health care and the aging population.
An in-camera session of the Board was held prior to convening the meeting. During the session, the Board continued the discussion regarding the compensation review. Mr. Scott went on to provide an update from the Nominating Committee meeting on March 4, 2010 and announced that Dr. Brian Postl is the Chair-elect and would be assuming this position of Board Chair following the March 2011 Board meeting.
Mr. Berthelot provided an overview of current data and information products in the area of patient costs.
Mr. Gary Catlin, Director General, Statistics Canada, presented on data releases from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) and aboriginal health data development activities.
Dr. Cory Neudorf, Chair of the Canadian Population Health Initiative (CPHI) Council, provided an update on the activities of CPHI, including the Council’s recent discussion on its role, evaluation activities, as well as an overview of CPHI’s analytical activities, including the flagship report on Exploring Urban Environments and Inequalities in Health.
Mr. Berthelot presented the Board with data findings from recent and upcoming analytical releases, including updated wait times data and bariatric surgery data. He also provided an update on the upcoming Health Indicators report.
The next Board meeting will be held on June 10-11, 2010 in Edmonton, Alberta.
