Dr. Marlene Smadu
Dr. Marlene Smadu is one of two members representing the Prairies on the CIHI Board. Dr. Smadu is the vice-president of Quality and Transformation with the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. Prior to her current role, she served as the associate dean, Southern Saskatchewan Campus and International Student Affairs for the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan, the assistant deputy minister of health and principal nursing advisor for the government of Saskatchewan, and as education consultant and executive director at the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association. Dr. Smadu is an inaugural member of the Saskatchewan Health Quality Council Board, and served as vice-chair and now chair of that Board. Dr. Smadu chairs the Professional Development and Education Advisory Committee for the Canadian Patient Safety Institute, and is the facilitator for the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) – Government of Saskatchewan Partnership Table that addresses nursing retention and recruitment. Dr. Smadu, having served as president of the Canadian Nurses Association, is now the 3rd vice-president of the International Council of Nurses.
