Analytical Plan

Printer-friendly version

The purpose of CIHI’s Analytical Plan is to provide a coordinated view of our upcoming new reports and indicators. With this work, we aim to

  • Enlighten policy options
  • Answer the most critical questions of health system managers, clinicians and other health stakeholders
  • Inform the public
  • Be transparent for our partners in order to identify opportunities for collaboration and avoid duplication

The plan builds on consultations regarding the information needs of CIHI’s priority audiences, including policy-makers and health system managers. It represents a rolling picture of CIHI’s new and upcoming analytical projects, including new indicators and studies, over 2 years. For more information, download our Analytical Plan for 2016 to 2018. The plan is updated twice a year.

Areas of focus

Cancer

Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and consumes a significant proportion of health care resources. Our studies and indicators shed light on variations in cancer care and treatments across Canada to support the delivery of high-quality and accessible services.

Quality and patient safety

How well and how safely is care delivered to Canadian patients? High-quality care is about getting the best outcomes for patients. A focus on patient safety aims to reduce the risk of harm during the delivery of care. Our analytical work informs efforts to improve the quality and safety of patient care. To achieve this, we measure health system performance and identify factors that lead to better, safer care and health outcomes.

Bridging population health and health services

Canadians are among the healthiest people in the world. However, not all Canadians benefit from good health. Studies in this area examine the factors that affect the health and well-being of a variety of Canadian population groups. The studies analyze how these groups use and access health services and they explore health outcomes at a population health level.

Access

Improving access to care and reducing wait times are prominent health policy issues in Canada and other countries. We are committed to working with partners to address information gaps in this area. We need to further what we know about the timeliness and availability of health services across the country.

Efficiency

Health care dollars are always in short supply, and in tough economic times they are increasingly scarce. Work in this area looks at the value of health care funding and investments. This work offers insight on where efforts can be focused to deliver better quality of care at lower cost. Our analyses examine how money is spent in the health care system and how resources are distributed. These analyses shed light on how potential savings can be achieved through a better understanding of population health needs.

International comparisons

How does Canada’s health system compare with those of other developed countries? Work in this area explores international variations in population health, health services and health system performance. This work helps provide further perspective on what is working well in our health system and where to focus improvement efforts.
