Looking at selected medical tests, treatments and procedures in Canada, a new report finds that up to 30% of them are potentially unnecessary. Unnecessary tests and treatments waste health system resources, increase wait times for patients in need and can lead to patient harm.

After almost a year of consultations with CIHI’s stakeholders, spanning 5 phases of redesign and more than 3,500 responses, cihi.ca will now provide a more effective user experience — one that supports how visitors told us they want to access CIHI’s products and services.

November 30, 2016 — Updated data for a number of health system performance indicators is now available in the interactive Your Health System (YHS) web tool created by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). This online tool allows users to access an array of health system data on hospitals, long-term care (LTC) facilities and the health of Canadians across the country.
On November 19, 2016, CIHI’s president and CEO David O’Toole signed a statement committing CIHI to several activities to address the national opioid crisis. The joint statement was signed at the Opioid Conference and Summit in Ottawa.
CIHI is proud to announce that the project Care Planning Tools: Changing Practice Among Alberta First Nations Communities won in the Small to Medium Sized Businesses category at the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) 2016 Ingenious Award Gala. The award was presented in Toronto on November 8, 2016.
