A classification groups like information into a limited number of mutually exclusive statistical categories (and sub-categories) to organize it for easy retrieval and reference. CIHI supports a number of classifications for use in collecting and analyzing information on health care in Canada.

NEW! Shadow Files for v. 2009 ICD-10-CA and CCI 

CIHI has prepared two Shadow Files with post-it notes indicating errata and enhancements in v. 2009 ICD-10-CA/CCI. These CIHI v. 2009 Shadow Files can be merged with your v. 2009 personal or departmental Shadow Files.

Quebec Implementation of ICD-10-CA and CCI

Version 2009 of ICD-10-CA/CCI replaces version 2006

Version 2009 of ICD-10-CA/CCI replaces version 2006. ICD-10-CA has 320 new codes and 251 deactivated codes. CCI has 1555 new codes and 1697 deactivated codes. To assist with data retrieval from one version of the classification to the next, you may also wish to purchase our Evolution Tables. Evolution tables trace the heritage of a current code in the classification and are useful as a quick guide to understanding macro changes within the classification. Online eQuery Tool

CIHI's online eQuery tool helps registered users find answers to their ICD-10-CA/CCI coding questions. The service is available to all clients who have purchased the ICD-10-CA/CCI CD-ROM.

CIHI Supported Classifications

  • ICD-10-CA—Enhanced Canadian version of the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. ICD-10-CA replaces the earlier ICD-9/ICD9-CM classification.
  • CCI—Canadian Classification of Health Interventions, developed to accompany ICD-10-CA. CCI replaces the earlier CCP classification.
  • ICF—International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (formerly known as ICIDH).

Coding Standards

CIHI provides the Canadian Coding Standards to promote data quality and consistency in the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) and the National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS).

National Coding Advisory Committee

The ICD-10-CA/CCI National Coding Advisory Committee provides CIHI with advice on the development and ongoing enhancement of coding standards. Standards are only incorporated into the Canadian Coding Standards for ICD-10-CA and CCI if they are applicable to all provinces and territories.

Membership includes one external representative from each province and territory and internal support from DAD, NACRS, Case Mix and Health Indicators. External members are appointed by the respective provincial/territorial Coding Quality Committee, where one exists, or by the ministry of health.

Classification Advisory Committee

The ICD-10-CA/CCI Classification Advisory Committee provides CIHI with advice on the maintenance and enhancement of ICD-10-CA and CCI. In doing so, the Classification Advisory Committee will ensure the continued capability of the classifications to meet the needs of all health care providers. The Classification Advisory Committee, supported by CIHI staff, currently comprises 12 members who are respected health care professionals, including, but not restricted to, physicians with research, teaching and/or clinical responsibilities. The membership reflects a broad spectrum of specialties to encompass the continuum of the health care field. Membership also includes representation from Health Canada and Statistics Canada.

National ICD-10-CA/CCI Electronic Products Advisory Group

The purpose of the National ICD-10-CA/CCI Electronic Products Advisory Group is:

  • To provide advice on the ongoing development of new and enhancement of existing ICD-10-CA and CCI electronic products.
  • To review proposals and provide feedback on the potential impact of changes on coding, data capture and data quality.
  • To advise on appropriate CIHI communication and educational strategies for implementation of new products or enhancements throughout the health information management community.
  • To suggest appropriate individuals to act as Advisory Committee Members.
  • To share information and solicit feedback related to ICD-10-CA and CCI electronic products to provincial/territorial end-users

Membership includes provincial/territorial representation reflective of the users of ICD-10-CA and CCI electronic products.

Public Submissions for Enhancements to ICD-10-CA and CCI

CIHI has opened a public submission process to allow users of the classifications and the health data they provide an opportunity for input in the maintenance and enhancement cycle. The Public Submission Guidelines provide an in-depth explanation of the process and list the required criteria for completion of the Submission Request Form.
