Nursing Data
Background
The Canadian Regulated Nursing Professions Database includes data for the three regulated nursing professions in Canada: Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Registered Nurses (RN) and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN).
The database contains demographic, education and employment information on Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses in Canada. The LPN and RN data are pan-Canadian containing demographic, education and employment information on RNs and LPNs in Canada. The RPN data contains the same information but includes only data from the four western provinces that regulate RPNs as a separate nursing profession. The data are collected under the terms of agreements with the provincial/territorial regulating authorities responsible for the each licensure of each nurse type.

- Licensed NPs 2003 to present
- Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)
- Supply and distribution information on LPNs in Canada
- Excluding Nunavut
- 2002 to present
- Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN)
- Supply and distribution information on RPNs in Canada
- Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia
- 2002 to present
- Nurse Practitioner (NP) Data
- Historically, CIHI collected additional NP data. CIHI now receives NP data along with RN data.
Data Elements
Provincial/territorial regulatory authorities are responsible for data collection, which occurs during the annual registration process. The data are manually entered and a provincial/territorial file is submitted to CIHI in a standardized format. Not all data elements collected from the registration forms are sent to CIHI; each regulatory authority collects additional information for its own administrative and/or research purposes, apart from the elements outlined in the Data Agreement.
Data are received and organized by CIHI, and calculated variables are created by combining data elements. For example, Birth Year is subtracted from Data Year in order to create the variable Age.
