National Health Expenditure Database
The National Health Expenditure database (NHEX) provides an overview of all health spending in Canada, by spending category and source of funding.
Source
Data are extracted manually from diverse public documents, including national and provincial/territorial public accounts and other financial reports. Other sources include private insurance companies, AC Nielsen Canada and Statistics Canada.
Data Elements
The database contains expenditure data on:
- Over 40 categories,
- Five sources of finance (federal, provincial, territorial and municipal governments, workers' compensation boards and other social security funds and the private sector).

Purpose
The purpose of NHEX is to:
- support CIHI's mandate
- collect, process and analyse summary data on all health expenditures in Canada
- provide a macro perspective on health spending in Canada
- facilitate provincial/territorial, national and international comparative reporting
- support policy planning and decision making at the provincial/territorial and national levels
- support related analysis and research by others
Data Quality
Through our Data Quality Enhancement Program, CIHI strives to ensure that the quality of the information in our data holdings is suited to its intended uses, and that data users are provided good information about data quality.
Privacy
Data disclosure is determined by CIHI's privacy principles and policies. The NHEX privacy impact assessment (PDF) 50 KB demonstrates that its practices comply with these principles and policies. Agreements do not allow for the release of confidential data obtained from the private insurance companies and AC Nielsen Canada.

Expert/Advisory Groups
The NHEX Expert Working Group provides CIHI with advice on the continued development of the NHEX database and related outputs. Members, representing different research and user groups, are selected based on their expertise in health economics.
