Adverse Events in Canadian Hospitals

Recent studies have estimated that between 44,000 to 98,000 deaths per year are related to health system (hospital-related) errors in the U.S., many of which were preventable. Given that no similar studies had been done to estimate hospital-based adverse events in Canada, a research project sponsored by CIHI and CIHR was undertaken.

The goal of this research project was to determine:

  • the extent of adverse events, both avoidable and unavoidable, in Canadian hospitals; and
  • the availability of routinely collected data that could help monitor and reduce adverse events.
