The World Health Organization found that injuries—both intentional and unintentional—accounted for 16% of the global burden of disease in 1998. In Canada and the United States, injuries are the leading cause of death for those age 1 to 44. Increasingly, trauma is being recognized as a global public health concern. At the same time, injuries are considered one of the most avoidable health problems: an estimated 90% are preventable.
At CIHI, we collect and publish data from our trauma registries to provide policy and decision-makers with accurate and comprehensive information on injuries. From this, stakeholders can develop injury-prevention strategies and programs and evaluate the impact of injuries on the Canadian health care system.

Databases and Data Sources
More Information
We manage two trauma registry databases: the National Trauma Registry (injury hospitalizations and major injury hospitalizations) and the Ontario Trauma Registry (major injury hospitalizations and injury deaths). These registries provide data on patients hospitalized or killed due to trauma in Canada and in Ontario. Their goals are to
- Contribute to the reduction of injuries and related deaths
- Facilitate provincial and international injury comparisons
- Increase awareness of injury as a public health challenge in Canada and support injury-related research
National Trauma Registry
The National Trauma Registry (NTR) provides national statistics on injuries in Canada. It has two data sets:
- The Minimum Data Set (MDS) includes demographic, diagnostic and procedural information on all admissions to acute care hospitals in Canada due to injury.
- The Comprehensive Data Set (CDS) includes demographic, administrative and clinical data on severely injured patients who are hospitalized due to trauma in specialized trauma centres in participating provinces in Canada.
Ontario Trauma Registry
Financed by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ontario Trauma Registry (OTR) provides statistics on injuries in Ontario. The OTR has two data sets:
- The Comprehensive Data Set (CDS) includes demographic, administrative and clinical data on severely injured patients who are hospitalized due to trauma in specialized trauma centres in Ontario.
- The Death Data Set (DDS) contains data on all deaths due to injury, including demographics, cause of death, injury details, motor vehicle crash information and other factors contributing to death.
