While individuals diagnosed with a mental illness or an addiction may receive community care or primary care, hospitalization remains an important component of mental health services. This is particularly true among those whose mental illness has become severe or for those with no other care options. Hospitalization can be very beneficial in stabilizing someone’s condition. It contributes to patient safety and also helps connect patients with supports and services outside the hospital.
Our work spans inpatient hospitalization, population health, health workforce planning, pharmaceuticals, health expenditures, home and continuing care, primary care and, most recently, community mental health services. We help foster a better understanding of the factors influencing mental health and addictions, as well as the treatment of these diseases, by collecting data and providing insight on hospital services, patient make-up, and incidences, causes and impacts. This, in turn, informs the policy, clinical and service management elements within the mental health field.

Hospital Mental Health Database
The Hospital Mental Health Database (HMHDB) contains hospitalization data for mental illness across Canada. It also provides demographic and medical diagnosis information for inpatient hospital stays from all provinces and territories for people admitted to hospital for mental illness reasons. HMHDB data is gathered from four sources:
- Administrative separation records of psychiatric and general hospitals through selected extracts of the Discharge Abstract Database (DAD) for those provinces and territories participating in DAD
- Data submitted by a small number of hospitals and ministries of health through the Hospital Mental Health Survey, an annual collection of data on separations from some psychiatric hospitals
- Administrative separation records of psychiatric and general hospitals in Quebec through the Hospital Morbidity Database (HMDB)
- Clinical and administrative records for designated adult beds in Ontario through the Ontario Mental Health Reporting System (OMHRS)
Ontario Mental Health Reporting System
The Ontario Mental Health Reporting System (OMHRS) contains data about individuals admitted to adult mental health beds in the province of Ontario. It includes information about their mental and physical health, as well as which social supports and services they use. The data is collected at admission, discharge and every three months for patients with extended stays.
Resident Assessment Instrument–Mental Health
OMHRS data is sourced from the Resident Assessment Instrument–Mental Health (RAI-MH)©, a unique standardized data collection system for mental health. It is used by hospitals with designated adult inpatient mental health beds as well as by specialty and provincial psychiatric hospitals. OMHRS includes data on care planning, outcome measurement, quality improvement and case mix–based funding applications. It also includes demographic, administrative and clinical information collected on clients from 70 participating hospitals in Ontario since October 1, 2005. OMHRS data is of particular interest to researchers, health care facilities, regional health authorities, ministries of health and others to explore areas such as client characteristics, resource utilization and outcomes.
